Share the Harvest: CWD Testing Requirements

Deer harvested from CWD Management Zone counties may only be donated to Share the Harvest if they are tested for CWD. CWD Management Zone Counties for the 2019-2020 deer season include: Adair, Barry, Cedar, Chariton, Christian, Clark, Crawford, Franklin, Gasconade, Hickory, Howell, Jefferson, Knox, Linn, Macon, Mercer, Oregon, Ozark, Perry, Polk, Putnam, St. Charles, St. Clair, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Stone, Sullivan, Taney, Warren, and Washington counties.

Deer from CWD Management Zone counties can only be donated at meat processors participating in the Share the Harvest CWD Testing Program. Processors accepting deer for donation from CWD Management Zone counties are listed below.

Other information about Share the Harvest Donation for deer harvested in CWD Management Zone counties:

  • Deer can be sampled prior to donation, but hunters must present the CWD barcode number provided at the sampling location to the participating processor.
  • Hunters may also present their unsampled deer for donation to participating processors; the processor will collect a tissue sample or the head for testing.
  • Hunters wishing to donate their deer from CWD Management Zone counties wishing to preserve the cape of their deer for taxidermy are reminded that deer with the head removed are not eligible for donation unless a sample was collected and a sample number is provided.
  • Some processors who are taking CWD samples won’t or can’t sample the deer if the hunter doesn’t want the cape cut. The processors need either the head with the cape already removed by a taxidermist or someone else, or a sample number for a CWD sample already collected by a taxidermist.

There have been no known cases of CWD infecting people, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) strongly recommends having deer tested for CWD if harvested in an area known to have cases of the disease. The CDC also recommends not eating meat from animals that test positive for CWD.
