Mandatory CWD Sampling (Voluntary in 2020)

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and related public health concerns, mandatory CWD sampling requirements for hunters in CWD Management Zone counties on Nov. 14th & 15th have been suspended.

Note: tracking and managing CWD remains a priority, and sampling stations will remain open for hunters who voluntarily choose to participate in this critical surveillance effort.

Counties in the CWD Management Zone are: Adair, Barry, Cedar, Chariton, Christian, Clark, Crawford, Franklin, Gasconade, Hickory, Howell, Jefferson, Knox, Linn, Macon, Mercer, Oregon, Ozark, Perry, Polk, Putnam, St. Charles, St. Clair, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Stone, Sullivan, Taney, Warren, and Washington.

Visiting an MDC sampling station on November 14th & 15th

Select the CWD Management Zone Map to the right to enlarge it and for more information.

Stations are open 7:30 am- 8:00pm. MDC asks hunters and others who are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, have recently tested positive for COVID-19, or have a known COVID-19 exposure to refrain from visiting CWD sampling stations. Hunters may bring their entire deer or the head (with at least a few inches of neck attached) to MDC sampling stations. Note, hunters are reminded to follow new carcass transport regulations.

The following steps are being taken at sampling stations to minimize the risk of COVID-19 spread:

  • Hunters will be asked to stay in their vehicles
  • All MDC staff will be wearing masks and gloves
  • Hunters will only be asked to provide county of harvest and will not be asked to identify harvest location on a map

Tips for Visiting an MDC CWD Sampling Station on Nov. 14th & 15th

  • Follow new carcass transport regulations when traveling to a sampling station
  • Field dress and Telecheck your deer before arrival.
  • You can bring the carcass or just the head. (It is OK to remove the cape before you get to the sampling station.)
  • Be prepared to provide your Telecheck ID number and the county of harvest.
  • If using a paper permit, have it detached from the deer for easy access. If using the MO Hunting app, have your permit and Telecheck information readily available.
  • Position the deer in your vehicle with the head and neck accessible.

  • CWD sampling takes only a few minutes and consists of cutting an incision across the throat of harvested deer to remove lymph nodes for testing.
  • Tissue samples are sent to an independent lab for testing.
  • There is no approved test for CWD on live deer.
  • Hunters presenting bucks bound for taxidermy should inform MDC staff of that. Staff will complete paperwork and inform the hunters about participating taxidermists taking CWD tissue samples. The cape may also be removed from the animal prior to being taken to a sampling station as long as about six inches of the neck is left attached.
  • Hunters will be given a card with information on getting free test results for their deer after samples are processed.

Why MDC Samples For CWD On Opening Weekend

Opening weekend of the firearms deer season is the most popular two hunting days for most deer hunters. Hunters take about a third of our state’s total annual deer harvest during those two days. Focusing CWD sampling efforts on this key weekend gives MDC the best opportunity to collect the most tissue samples during a very concentrated period. The increased number of CWD samples gives MDC scientists a much better understanding of the distribution and prevalence of the disease – where it is and how many deer may have it. It can also help find new cases in new areas.
